Every year, som 5,000-6,000 people get sick of salmonella in the USA. About 10% die - almost exclusively infants and people over 91. The vast majority of those cases are related to the person eating contaminated foods.

Not a single case has yet been documented as being related to contact with dogs, except for a 20-30 cases every year, for whom the source is unknown, so it cannot be excluded that eating dog feces could have been the reason.
